Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) about yoga

What are the benefits of yoga?
Yoga can help to improve flexibility, strength, stamina and general well-being. It helps your muscle tone, improves concentration and stress levels and balances your energy. Yoga helps to detoxify the internal organs through its effect on the flow of blood and lymph. Yoga can be therapeutic for many ailments and conditions. If you have any particular concerns, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before you start.

How will yoga help me to de-stress?
Focussing your mind and body during the poses helps to bring calm. Your worrying thoughts will drift away, giving your body a well-earned opportunity to relax! The breathing practices and Savasana (relaxation posture) also help with this.

Do you need to be physically flexible when you start?
No. Over time, yoga will help to improve your flexibility. During the class modifications are offered so that everybody can work according to his or her own physical capabilities. It is very important to 'listen to your own body' in an honest way and decide what is appropriate for you.

Do I need any special equipment?
I recommend practicing on a yoga mat as well as the use of foam blocks. You don't need to bring any - mats and blocks are available for your use at Inner Space. I can also supply mats and blocks for home use if required.

Do I have to do yoga in bare feet?
Yes, please - it will help your balance as well as strengthening your feet.

Can I come on my own?
Most people come on their own to the classes - but you are welcome to bring friends.

Should I eat before the class?
Yoga should be practiced on a fairly empty stomach so it is a good idea not to eat a big meal just before the class.

Are there different types of yoga?
All yoga dates back around 5,000 years and was first written down by the sage Patanjali. These "yoga sutras" have been passed down through the centuries by different teachers. This has resulted in many different schools of yoga, including Iyengar, Astangar, Bikram and Hatha, for example. The style I teach is based on Iyengar yoga, which is named after the guru B.K.S Iyengar.
